Nokia Reveals New Arte Luxury Handset

Nokia is in the news yet again with reports of a new 8800 luxury edition handset make the rounds. The 8800 Gold Arte is plaited with 18-carat gold and white leather trimmings. It features a 2 inch QVGA OLED display that sports 16 million colors and comes with 4GB of internal user memory. Other features include Bluetooth, an accelerometer, turn to mute, and a 3.2MP AF camera. 

There’s no official word on the availability of the handset yet not a price tag so stay tuned.

Here’s yet another generic looking cross-between-N81-and-N96 handset from Nokia that’s been designed to be part of their gaming range. The N85 gives the impression that it’s a very capable handset on all fronts with features galore, but allow me to give you a better idea.

Form Factor
The N85 dual slider may be a bit generic in design for Nokia but it still manages to pull off a chic look and feel. It’s quite sleek and sexy to be more accurate. It has a 2.6-inch OLED display that sports a 240 x 320 pixel, 16 million color resolution. The use of this type of display was a smart idea, because it not only has better colors and sharper tones, but also manages to reduce the consumption of power from the screen. It’s a bit of a problem in direct sunlight though. The display tends to get a bit lost amongst the reflections but not too much.

It has a very minimalist look when the front navigation panel and keys are not active. The handset is equipped with Nokia’s Navi-Wheel that can be used for touch sensitive navigation as well as a regular five way-nav pad, a shortcut quick access menu key and rubberized Call Answer and End keys. The open keys although a bit hard under the fingerprint-magnet hard plastic casing are manageable. My issue was with the Menu and Cancel keys. The position is a little too close to the edge and hence they tend to not only be a little harder to press but sometimes a bit difficult to reach. Nothing you can’t get used to though.

The pop sliders are both smooth and very responsive for opening and shutting the multimedia and data entry keypads. Once again we see that Nokia could have a made better use of the keypad space and had maybe little larger keys, but there’re no other issues other than just that. The keys are neatly spaced out and comfortable to use. The multimedia keypad that pops out from the top also doubles as games keys and can also be used for zooming for the 5MP AF camera (with dual LEDs for a flash) that’s protected with a smooth sliding lens cover.

A micro USB port is located on one side at the top. On the other side at either end are a set of stereo speakers. Volume/zoom control, a key lock slider and the camera’s shutter release are located in between. A standard 3.5mm earphone socket, power key and universal micro USB port for the charger and PC connectivity are also placed here.

The N85 is a sturdy looking handset that gives off an air of machismo with a hint of class. If it weren’t for the plastic casing that looks quite bad after usage with fingerprints all over, I’d give it a five out of five on looks alone.

A Symbian OS 9.3 with a Series 60 UI coupled with an ARM 11 369 MHz processor makes the N85 a smooth handset for navigation and control. The Accelerometer is quick when it comes to adjusting the screen orientation. However, the sensitivity is a bit too high. Nothing you can’t get used to. Using the Navi-Wheel to get around the menus is bliss and something the super lazy can appreciate. The shortcut menu activated by the dedicated key located near the nav-pad, is handy when you need to access media and such but not much else. The interface, of course, is still something to talk about.

Nokia Launches N79 in India

Nokia has launched the N79 in India with a special offer of preloaded 'Anthems 1998-2008', a compilation of 19 all-time favorite classic club songs and 17 new age music videos, presented by the Ministry of Sound. 

The Nokia N79 comes with a 4GB microSD card, features an FM transmitter and offers music playback time of up to 30-hours. It is also equipped with AGPS with voice navigation, 10 pre-loaded N-Gage games and a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED Flash.

"The Nokia N79 packs cutting-edge technology into a super-sleek, compact design – a characteristic typical of the iconic Nseries," said Devinder Kishore, Director Marketing, Nokia India. "It has been designed for those who want a device that is as appealing as it is powerful. This balance of performance, style and entertainment means that it is a defining step forward from the popular and very successful Nokia N72 and Nokia N73," he further added.

Each Nokia N79 pack comes with two additional interchangeable Xpress-On covers in different colors that have an inbuilt microchip that ensures that when the back cover is changed, the display theme changes automatically to match the color of the cover. These covers are available in five colors - Light Sea Blue, Espresso Brown, Olive Green, White and Coral Red.

The Nokia N79 is priced at Rs. 22,939.

Nokia has unveiled its touch-screen smartphone - the 5800 XpressMusic.
 

The 5800 XpressMusic introduces the 'Media Bar', a drop down menu that provides direct access to music and entertainment, including favourite tracks, videos and photos. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the web and to online sharing. The phone supports Flash content and offers all the music essentials, including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks and support for all main digital music formats, a 3.5mm jack and built-in surround sound stereo speakers.

"With the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, we set out to connect people through the one thing we all feel a universal connection to - music," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia. "The way in which people enjoy music is different around the world. With that in mind, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic gives people the freedom to experience music they love in the way they prefer."

The phone features a 3.2-inch widescreen display, a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording.
 
Equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, the phone allows images or videos to be shared via online communities, such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook. Music playlist song titles can also be shared through  Bluetooth , MMS or online sharing.
 
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports 60 languages worldwide and offers a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, a pen stylus - and for music enthusiasts, a plectrum.
 
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available worldwide beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008 for an estimated retail price of 279 EUR before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia has introduced the Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte, a new premium mobile phone engineered from carbon fibre, titanium, polished glass and stainless steel.
The 8800 is custom built to ensure the precision engineering that these materials require. The minimalistic and seamless surfaces, slide mechanism and light weight of the phone all feature throughout the Nokia 8800 Arte line. Nokia is launching its N96 in Delhi today a few days before the iPhone 3G is launched here in India. The N96 was initially set to launch first in the UK on the 1st of October. But Nokia seems to have changed their plans and are launching it here first.
The timing is so wickedly correct. Even as we wait for the iPhone, Nokia is dropping this fully loaded beauty into our laps and I estimate the price to be somewhere in the vicinity of Rs. 36,000.The quandary about what phone to buy just got bigger and more complicated with these two behemoths launching so close together. The Indian market is truly getting to be the biggest mobile market on the planet and personally, being spoilt for choice, we have no complaints whatsoever.

Nokia To Launch a New Flip Phone

Nokia’s latest offering is a stylish flip phone or clamshell handset called the 3640 fold. This GSM handset is equipped with an internal display of 2 inches with 256K colors and it also has an external 1.36-inch display that also features 265k colors. It features a large analog clock as a screensaver. The 3640 fold comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera and 30MB of internal memory with microSD card support as well. Other features will include a media player for audio and video, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.The handset will also support GPRS/EDGE.

According to reports,the handset should start shipping anytime soon and is priced at approximately Rs. 7,910 (125 Euro) before taxes and subsidies.

Access to product upgrades are one of the perks of being in the tech industry. If you've come across a great product, you can't wait to see what the company’s going to come up with next. For instance, Nokia's E61 and then the E62 made Symbian a force to reckon with in the business world, and the upgraded and slimmer E61i with a 2MP camera took it a step further. And now the E71 is here. This time Nokia's gone beyond a step – it's a big leap, in fact.

Form Factor
The design is superb.The E71 seems to be a culmination of elegance, style, and class, with functionality kept utmost in mind. I think its steel shell gives it a macho look and feel. The display may be a little smaller than the E61i at 2.36 inches, but on the whole the E71’s specs are way better. The QWERTY keypad looks rather compressed, however, and will take a bit of getting used to. But the five-way nav-pad and relevant shortcut keys are located for easy accessibility. The prominent bottom portion of the handset kind of reminded me of Jay Leno’s chin.

The E71 is just 10mm thin and weighs 127g. This might seem a bit heavy, but it actually works in the handset's favor. The weight makes it feel solid and secure in your palm, and also imparts a sense of balance. The microSD card slot and USB port are located on one side, just beneath the infrared lens. On the other side you’ll find the volume/zoom keys and a dedicated key for the voice recorder. The 2.5mm earphone socket is located above these.

What surprised me the most is the lack of a dedicated camera key. Considering that the E71 has a 3.2MP autofocus camera (with LED flash) it's odd there’s no soft-touch key that allows you to focus, or so I thought. I realized – quite by chance, I must add – that you can autofocus using the the 'T' key located just under nav-pad, and then use the center key of the nav-pad to release the shutter and capture the image. It’s ridiculous... you won't know any of this till you actually read the manual – and how many of us bother to do that?

6210 Navigator to Launch in India Soon

The Wait Ends Soon.....

Although you may see it on the shelves in the gray market the 6210 Navigator has not yet been officially launched by Nokia for the Indian market.

But the wait won’t be long as my sources tell me that the launch is sometime early next week.

As for the pricing, it’s available for Rs. 17,500 in the gray market, but no word yet on the official Nokia price. Considering a recent rumor that Nokia has reduced some of the handset prices by as much 10% in some cases. All I can say is that I hope that holds true for the 6210 and some of the other recent launches like the E71.

My sources also let slide that it’s just possible that Nokia may also be launching Nokia Maps 2.0 as well. Hopefully or should I say it seems rather obvious at this point that both would be launched together. Personally, I got my fingers crossed.

Nokia Launches 2 New XpressMusic Handsets

Nokia has added two more devices to its music range of handsets: the 5220 and the 5320 XpressMusic.

"Today's additions to the XpressMusic range up the ante with new ways for consumers to access their media, as well as interact and share content with friends and communities anytime, anywhere," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, LIVE category, Nokia.

The 5320 features 3G social entertainment capabilities with Web 2.0 access. A new voice-controlled Say and Play feature lets you say the name of an artist or song to play it. Like other XpressMusic handsets, the 5320 also has dedicated music keys, and thankfully a 3.5mm audio jack. According to Nokia, the handset can deliver up to 24 hours of playback time.

Other features include an audio chip for hi-fi sound quality, extendable memory up to 8GB, HS-USB for fast music transfer, and HSDPA for fast access to data. This loaded handset has a full-featured Internet browser, access to Ovi, and Nokia Search 4.1, which allows users to find and share media content and information. It also allows for N-Gage gaming in the convenient landscape mode.

The other handset (Nokia 5220 XpressMusic) seems to have a bit of a lopsided design. No, it’s not your eyes playing tricks; the phone is actually designed that way. It has a built-in lanyard that makes it easy to carry around. Other features include dedicated XpressMusic keys, a 3.5mm audio jack, and support for external memory via microSD cards.

These handsets are equipped with 2 megapixel cameras and FM radios. Both are compatible with the recently launched Nokia Music Store, where consumers can choose from more than 2 million tracks and browse, download, stream and sync, either to a PC or side-load directly to a mobile device.

Nokia 5320 and 5220 XpressMusic are expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2008 with estimated retail prices of Rs 13,980 (€220) and Rs 10,166 (€160) respectively, before taxes and subsidies

The Nokia Tube or 5800 XpressMedia handset is making the mobile scene yet again - this time with live images. This S60 5th edition handset with a touch screen UI will feature a 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera with an LED flash and Carl Zeiss optics. Since the handset will also come with on board GPS the camera will also support Geotagging.

Other features would include – a 3.5mm earphone socket that would double as an AV out like in the N95, microSD card support for external memory and 140MB of internal RAM. For connectivity the handset supports GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi and of course Bluetooth with A2DP. The Tube has a 3.2-inch touch screen display sporting a 640 x 320 pixel resolution and 16 million colors. The handset weighs in at about 104g and has dimension of - 115×52×14.5 mm.

There’s still no word about it’s official launch and pricing so stay tuned.

This handset features a slide design and smooth curves, so don’t confuse it with the previous 7610 candy bar handset with the odd keypad. This handset offers Xpress-On covers in a choice of a set of 'steel blue' and 'red' covers offset by a muted gray front surface, or 'bright lilac' and 'steel blue' contrasted against a pristine white front surface. The innovative 'Theme Colorizer' feature lets people identify and capture any color and further tailor a look by applying captured colors to the phone's key illumination and wallpaper.

Additional features include a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 8x digital zoom, instant messaging and TV out for image sharing. With the Nokia 7610 Supernova, consumers can also enjoy and manage music with a dedicated music key, FM-radio, an MP3 player and access to Nokia Music Store through the Nokia Music PC Client. The Nokia WidSets service gives access to enjoy and share content on favorite websites through the device.

The Nokia 7510 Supernova is a flip phone with a push-to-open side key. Available with Xpress-On front and back covers in 'storm blue', 'red', 'emerald green' and 'espresso brown' the Nokia 7510 Supernova features light effects with a hidden-until-lit display and a reminder light. The phone features a 2 megapixel camera with NIPS, LED flash, 4x digital zoom, a 512MB microSD card, a large 2.2-inch QVGA display and a new user friendly Nokia web browser for easy access to Nokia Search, Share on OVI and Flickr.

This handset also comes with a music player, FM Radio, access to Nokia Music Store and Nokia Music PC Client. Additional features include a link to YouTube, access to Nokia Maps 1.2 to navigate with free mapping, routing and local search, support of A-GPS and the Nokia WidSets service.
